After working with @verticalgardenskenya on our hydroponic farm build in Nairobi (“Pole Pole”) in 2023, we found that they needed a website to represent their brand. We matched 2 Intro to AgTech alumni to the project; their results are stellar! In 2024, our Intro to AgTech Cohort 4 and 6 alumni, Fatima Rimi and Pammi Balani, seized the incredible opportunity to design and develop a website for Vertical Gardens, a farm design company in Nairobi, Kenya. Through their collaboration, they created a sleek and visually appealing website that provides Vertical Gardens with an effective platform to showcase their products and services, addressing the diverse needs of their clients. The final product exceeded expectations, and Vertical Gardens couldn't be more thrilled with its new online presence.

During Cohort 6 of the Intro to Agtech program, students visited a cannabis farm in Upstate New York, where they discovered widespread crop health issues due to unidentified deficiencies. This observation led to the development of the Plant Identification API, designed to assist farm workers in efficiently recognizing and addressing plant diseases. This tool allows users to submit a picture of a plant, providing them with general plant information, identifying potential diseases, and offering appropriate treatment solutions. The Plant Identification API empowers farm workers to identify issues and implement solutions early, thereby preventing crop loss. Give it a try!

In an effort to engage more people in AgTech tools for sustainable farming, we created our first set of AR/VR farm filters that you can use to examine which soil-less farm system would work best for you. The filters are modeled after some of our favorite vertical farming and aquaponic farm system solutions. Whether you’re a TikTok-er or an Instagrammer (or even a Metaverse-er), you can use our filters to see how your farm would operate in the real world. Just open our filters on your favorite social media app, tap to place, and hold to record to watch the life-like grow cycles of leafy greens and herbs - you can even hear the sounds that these farms make in real life!

In 2023, we had the honor of working on a potential website build for America on Trial’s Fix the 13th Campaign. This campaign aimed to spread awareness about the 13th Amendment and how it’s used to ensure modern-day slavery through the prison system, as well as advocate for reforms that would change this constitutional amendment. This served as great practice in web development and project management, as well as navigating messaging for social justice-oriented clients.

Through our work with the Community Resource Exchange, we got to support the black-women run collective - Beyond Bold & Brave, with their relaunch efforts. We matched our Cohort 4 alumni from Intro to AgTech to their first group project where they got to assess the needs of a client and develop a new logo, branding guide, and website design for the re-brand needs. This served as great practice in web design and UX design, as well as client communications and team delegation skills.

Our Intro to AgTech Cohort 3 Alumni, Jose Rodriguez, was matched to Brooklyn Supported Agriculture to redesign the black-led, worker-owned cooperative’s website with new consumer features and a refreshed look and feel. With the help of our team, he was able to create a modern, edgy look for the group which helps local farms in NYC, provides sliding-scale food prices to low-income communities, and conducts mutual aid efforts in NYC. They loved their new website just as much as we did!

During the pandemic shutdowns, we quickly rallied the resources needed to adapt our programming for fully remote environments. During this period, we were asked to steward our coding trainees for SYEP into activism/advocacy. So, we focused our training into a 6-week intensive that enabled them to build out full-scale websites to advocate for the social justice cause of their choosing. Our only requirements being that they properly craft a problem statement, research their area of concern, substantiate it with quantitative statistics, and propose solutions that they truly believe in. Their results were incredible.
